Barrister and Referee
Since coming to the Bar in 2007, Janet has practiced predominantly in commercial litigation with a focus on representative proceedings (class actions) and legal costs disputes, particularly appeals from costs assessments and applications for special costs orders such as lump sum costs orders and security for costs. Janet's practice is however, very diverse. She has experience in many other areas of law include administrative law, equity, industrial, work health and safety prosecutions and appellate work.
Prior to coming to the Bar, Janet practiced as a litigation solicitor at Westgarth Baldick, the Sydney ancestor of Corrs Chambers Westgarth. Thereafter she worked as a legal costs consultant/lawyer for around 15 years, initially with Sydney’s original cost consulting firm, Driscoll & Matters and later with DG Thompson, now known as DGT Costs Lawyers. She was instrumental in setting up DGT's Brisbane office in 2005/2006.
Janet is a graduate of the University of Adelaide and was admitted as a solicitor in New South Wales in 1989. In 2005 she was admitted as a solicitor in Queensland. She was called to the New South Wales Bar in 2007. She was junior counsel for the lead applicant in the Provident Capital class action against Australian Executor Trustees, which was the third biggest class action settlement in 2018. As a result of her combined costs and class action experience she was recently appointed to act as a costs referee in the Pearls Ponzi Scheme class action and the consumer class action against Cash Converters.
Janet is member of the NSW Bar Association's Costs and Fees Committee.
